About Me

Who I Am

I am a dedicated System Administrator with hands-on experience in managing and maintaining secure, efficient IT infrastructures. Currently in my final year of a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Systems and Network Engineering at SLIIT, I specialize in Linux systems, networking, and server administration...

My name is L.R. Hettiarachchi. I am a final-year undergraduate student at SLIIT University. I am following a specialization degree program in Computer Systems and Network Engineering. I am passionate about how interconnected systems drive the digital world. This passion drives me to select a field where I can design, secure, and manage critical IT infrastructure, with a focus on network engineering and Linux system administration.

My professional journey began with a 6-month in-plant trainee position as an IT Officer at Sirio Ltd, where I gained firsthand experience in troubleshooting, user support, system monitoring, and other related tasks. After that, I was promoted to Associate System Administrator and worked for around one and a half years. I am now a full-time System Administrator. Now I am responsible for managing Linux-based environments, maintaining enterprise network health, and ensuring business continuity through secure and scalable infrastructure solutions.

Academically and professionally, I have gained strong technical knowledge in network protocols, including BGP, OSPF, and HSRP, as well as Linux server configuration, IoT implementations, and network design. My experience and challenges enhanced my ability to think critically, collaborate in teams, and solve problems under pressure.

Additionally, I have completed some certification programs relevant to the network and systems field. There are Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching, Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), Checkpoint Firewall Essentials, and RedHat System Administration (RHCSA). These certifications provide a strong foundation in knowledge that helps understand modern network security practices and system integration.

In my view, IT professionals must not only master current technologies because technology changes day by day; we can not stop; therefore, we have to explore it. Personally, I am interested in advancing in areas like network security, cloud computing, and DevOps integration using open-source tools.

Additionally, I am a freelancer in both the game development and design fields. Already, I am hosting a website and providing freelancing services to global clients. My preferred platforms are Unreal Engine, Blender, and Adobe Packages.

Professional Development in PPW

After completing the Professional Practice in the Workplace (PPW) module, I experienced significant improvements in my professional behavior. This module has enhanced both my confidence and competence in core communication and career skills that are essential for success in the IT industry.

Telephone Etiquette Mastery

One of the most transformative lessons was in professional telephone communication. I learned the importance of maintaining professionalism, practicing active listening, handling difficult conversations calmly, and ensuring clarity in all phone interactions. The module helped me understand how subtle elements like tone of voice, speech clarity, and phrasing structure significantly impact a caller's perception and the overall effectiveness of workplace communication. Through practical scenarios and etiquette guidelines, I've developed a more polished, polite, and responsive communication style that serves me well in professional settings.

Professional Report Writing

My understanding of professional documentation was revolutionized through the report writing component. Previously, I viewed reports as merely formal essays, but I now appreciate the distinct structural elements like executive summaries, strategic use of headings, tables, and bullet points for clarity. The module taught me how to clearly outline objectives, organize technical content logically, and present information in a format that meets professional standards. As a network and system administrator, these skills are invaluable for creating documentation, incident reports, and project proposals that effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences.

Interview Techniques & Professional Presence

The interview skills component dramatically improved my professional readiness. I gained practical knowledge about preparing for various interview formats, including behavioral and technical interviews, with particular emphasis on the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) response method. The focus on nonverbal communication—such as appropriate body posture, maintaining eye contact, and voice modulation—has helped me project confidence. Through role-playing exercises and simulated interviews, I've developed the ability to evaluate my performance and systematically respond to challenging questions, which has been instrumental in my recent successful job interviews.

This PPW module has been a transformative experience that cultivated professional discipline and heightened self-awareness. The competencies developed will serve as a foundation throughout my IT career, particularly in roles where clear communication, effective documentation, and confident professional presentation are as crucial as technical expertise.
